Testing
Based upon the findings from the history and physical exam, Dr. Lewin will determine what type of testing is appropriate to determine the cause of your symptoms. Testing procedures could include:
- SKIN TESTING – this procedure, done in our office, involves introducing a small amount of the most common allergens applied to the skin, usually on the forearms. These tests are used to identify environmental allergies such as allergies to pollen, dust, mold and pet dander. They are also used to test for the most common food allergies. Test results are read 15 to 20 minutes later by the doctor.
- BLOOD TESTING – offers another option for determining both food and environmental allergies. Dr. Lewin might recommend blood testing instead of or in addition to skin testing. Blood testing can be helpful when testing for a large number of allergens. Test results are available within a few days in most cases.
- LUNG FUNCTION TESTING – A Pulmonary function test (PFT) might be administered in our office. This simple procedure involves blowing into a tube which will measure how well your lungs work.
- ORAL FOOD CHALLENGE – This procedure is used to confirm suspected food allergies. The test consists of administering gradually increasing amounts of a food over a period of hours while the Dr. watches for signs of a reaction.
Treatment
After taking an extensive history and administering appropriate allergy testing, Dr. Lewin will determine the specifics of your allergy profile and discuss treatment options with you. If immunotherapy is indicated, Dr Lewin will create a custom formula of allergy drops specific to your allergies. The drops are taken under the tongue (sublingually), stimulating your immune system to produce antibodies that will fight your allergies.
