What is an allergic reaction?

An allergy is the body's over-reaction to normally harmless substances (antigens) in our environment, such as dust, pollens, foods, molds, and pets. If you are allergic, your immune system treats these antigens as harmful invaders and produces antibodies against them. These antibodies cause the allergic reaction.

What is Immunotherapy?

Immunotherapy is the process by which a slowly increasing dose of FDA-approved antigens, is given in order to build the body's tolerance to the things to which it is allergic. Immunotherapy is the only form of allergy therapy that treats the cause of your allergies and can permanently decrease your allergic reactivity.

What are my immunotherapy options?

In the past, allergy immunotherapy was only available by getting weekly allergy shots at the doctor's office. Current advances in allergy research and therapy have made it possible to use these same FDA-approved antigens to create drops. These drops are placed under the tongue and provide a safe, effective, at-home, patient and kid-friendly form of immunotherapy which eliminates the need for weekly doctor visits.

Of course, if drops are not a viable option for you, traditional allergy shot therapy is still an effective method of treatment offered by Dr. Lewin.

How effective are allergy drops?

Allergy drops have been shown to be an extremely effective way of treating all sorts of allergies. Sublingual immunotherapy has been used for over 70 years and makes up around 40% of all immunotherapy treatments in Europe. In 1998, after years of independent studies, the World Health Organization (WHO) concluded that allergy drops are a viable and effective alternative to classical injection immunotherapy.
